Some might wonder why we decided to cover yet another one of Jacob’s Loc’s shows at The Roxy. The words I wrote in my review of their show at The Roxy on January 18, 2005 still hold true, “Some artists' shows I've seen are what I call musical landmarks for me. I see the artist/band once and I'm satisfied that I have sufficiently experienced their music and performance live. But for me, Jacob’s Loc is not that sort of band. Their good qualities keep getting better and their creative force often yields something new for them to share with their fans.”

Less than seven months later, Jacob’s Loc added: The Loc-ettes to enrich the supporting vocals and live performance dynamics on a number of songs, a new original song titled “Rain is Fallin’” to their set, great covers of Led Zeppelin’s “D’Yer Mak’er,” Queen’s “Tie Your Mother Down” (which replaced Queen’s “Fat Bottomed Girls”) and Aerosmith’s “Last Child,” and enhanced renditions of their original songs.

Last summer, the band’s mini tour consisted of a performance at 91X’s Loudspeaker Showcase at The Casbah in San Diego and a date at Club Good Hurt in Venice Beach, California. This summer, the band more than doubled their appearances. They kicked off the

season with a show at the Celebrate Chula Vista Festival on July 4th, then ventured into new territory for the band by taking its first road tour across state borders to play a show on Friday, August 12th, at The Cheyenne Saloon in Las Vegas, Nevada. Then it was back to California for their next stops, a return date at The Roxy in West Hollywood on Saturday, August 13th and the tour’s final show on Wednesday, August 17th, at Aloha J’s in Temecula.

It seems that the band decided to take a gamble on two gambling towns and everyone came out winners! For those of you who don’t know, Temecula (the Spanish explorers' translation for the Luiseño Indians’ name for the city, “place of the sun”), which hosts an Indian gambling casino, is just over an hour southeast of Los Angeles and about an hour northeast of San Diego. So does this mean that the band is “going Vegas” or “going Hollywood”? Quite the contrary! Jacob’s Loc delighted crowds this summer with their unique blend of Southern funky blues-fused rock.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t make it to the show in Vegas, but the band said the show went very well, after the bouncers dealt with one rowdy patron. The Cheyenne Saloon is not part of the glitzy Vegas Strip scene. On the north end of Vegas, it caters to the locals.

We arrived at The Roxy around 10:30 PM to find that Jacob’s Loc’s set had been pushed back from 11PM to 12:15 AM. It was just as well since Ryan’s wife, Marlane, mentioned during a brief chat outside The Roxy that the band and its entourage had arrived not too long ago, having driven in from their first tour stop in Las Vegas.

The late hour and the fact that Jacob’s Loc was following Allrise, a local group with what seemed to be a good following, did not deter die-hard rockers from standing by for more rock ‘n roll. In fact, as Jacob's Loc’s set progressed, the crowd’s energy seemed to grow. The band performed the same set as it played for the Celebrate Chula Vista Festival. Men and women of all ages appreciate Jacob’s Loc’s music.
